Metals and plastics
Metal cans and plastic bottles together make up around 40 per cent of all household waste.
We produce 20 times more plastic today than we did 50 years ago and, unfortunately, the
majority of it goes into landfill sites where it takes hundreds of years to decompose.
Aluminium cans and tins are ideal for recycling, using 95 per cent less energy than using
raw materials. Recycle one aluminium can and you'll save enough energy to run a computer for
three hours. Top Tip - if you go to the supermarket take your old bags with you so you don't
have to use new ones.

Clothes and Textiles
Clothes and shoes are probably the most reusable part of household waste. If you don't know
someone who wants your old clothes you can deposit them in a clothes recycling bank to offer
them a new lease of life. Any clothes or material that you deposit that can't be reused can
be recycled. Top Tip - when you deposit your shoes, make sure you pair them by tying the
laces or using an elastic band.
