07/11/2007 - Berty Bank scores a century
LMB Education’s green-eyed monster is celebrating a century this month after signing up its 100th Berty Bank as part of Shoe Friends and The Clothes Collectors schemes.
The LMB Education team launched Berty in May 2007 and he’s proved so popular that he now features in a third of our schools.
The monster-sized clothing bank is awarded to schools who have out-grown their regular collection bins and sits in the playground waiting to be fed with unwanted shoes and clothes. Each Berty Bank holds around 500kg of clothes and shoes, which once collected are sorted at LMB’s east London warehouse and exported for reuse in developing countries.
Berty come in three colours and his animated design makes a great way of encouraging school children to recycle.
Shoe Friends and The Clothes Collectors are run by LMB Education in partnership with local authorities to educate and encourage school children to realise the value of their unwanted clothes and shoes, and recycle them rather than throw them out.
Lis Millard of LMB Education said: "Berty Bank is the perfect partner for spreading the recycling message to school children and stopping people from throwing their unwanted clothes and shoes into the rubbish bin.”
